I HATE missing the beginning of a series and I have a hard time getting into the series if I miss the beginning. Im the same way with movies, if I miss the beginning of a movie, even if it is one I have been dying to see, I wont watch it then but wait until I can watch the entire movie.
Here are some thoughts on the new fall lineup, in no particular order. It seems like the edgy thriller market is getting flooded. Let's hope we get some good offerings, because they tend to be my favorite type of shows. I'm relieved that it appears scripted tv is winning out against the reality tv market. Soaps seem to still be suffering from the onslaught, much to my dismay.
The Ringer on CW with Sara Michelle Gellar looks good. I'm anxious for Sara to have a triumphant return to tv and this looks like it may do the trick returning to her network home of sorts. Buffy fans are rejoicing. Can we hope for a guest appearance of James Marsters? The thought alone has me all salivating. This new series seems to be a twist on the old switched twins story. Heck, it has worked over and over in Hollywood, why not add some danger and mystery to the mix and see what happens. Let's hope it follows in Supernatural's footsteps, it is brought to us by some of the same writers. Starts Sept 13
Grimm looks so-so but may be worth watching an episode to see how it goes. Grimm seems suspiciously close to Supernatural. A detective learns he is a descendent of "hunters" of supernatural creatures. I really hate it when shows try to recreate the same element in their shows. Most of the time the element works for the original hit and not so much for copycats. Who knows, maybe it won't be the same, but my spidey sense is a tingling on this one. I hesitate to get invested in another NBC series, they usually dont do well, and NBC hasn't been the place for great tv for quite some time. They also have a bad habit of canceling tv series very quickly. The Cape anyone? *shudders* Starts Oct 21
Once Upon a Time on ABC, starts Sunday Oct 23. Now this looks like it may be better than Grimm. I am excited to see Jennifer Morrison back. In my opinion, House hasn't been the same since she left. I may have turned into quite the Huddy shipper, but Jennifer and Hugh had some wicked chemistry. I was disappointed it wasn't explored a bit more....oh back to the new show...It took me a minute to distinguish Jennifer from another actress on the show, Ginnifer Goodwin, they look like long lost twins to me. It looks like it will be a parallel universe show and so far I'm thinking Once Upon a Time is the easy winner in the dark fairy tale battle ABC and NBC have going.
Revenge, abc starts Sept 21, this is a maybe. The promo looks decent, but I am getting a little gun shy for a slick looking promo and I wonder how sustainable it is as a series and won't have much patience to stick with it if it falters. My tv time, and dvr space is valuable you see.The buzz on it is that it is a twist on The Count of Monte Cristo, that in itself has me intrigued. That reminds me...if you have not seen James Caviezal in the 2002 version of The Count of Monte Cristo you are missing out. It is one of my absolute favorite movies.
Bonus clip: Count of Monte Cristo....I think I will breaking out that dvd and watching it again. Love that movie!
Back to the task at hand. I don't watch many comedies, but Last Man Standing looks funny, love Tim Allen, let's hope they stay away from the schtick factor. The rest of the cast looks good too, so this one may be one of my rare sitcom keepers. Tom Allen stars as a man living in a world dominated by the women around him. Hopefully it wont go the "man is a doofus and the women are genius" route. If it is remotely as funny and charming as another ABC sitcom, The Middle, I will be one happy camper. Starts Oct 11on ABC.
Im looking forward to New Girl, love Zooey Deschanel. She has a quirkiness I love. She definitely has comic timing chops and that adorable girl next door vibe to her. She has been one of my favorite "romantic comedy" actresses for a while, LOVED her in 500 Days of Summer. I am not sure I am buying the whole "cant get a date" aspect of the show I mean really, just look at her. Have the producers been to the local shopping superstore to see what most people look like? I am looking forward to seeing how she fares in a sitcom. Airs Sept 20 on Fox.
J.J. Abrams' Person of Interest has me intrigued. I'm looking forward to James Caviezal. He is on my long list of favorite actors. I'm hopeful for him that his career makes a comeback. We need all the good actors in Hollywood we can get. Bad actors are a dime a dozen. Oh I could so mention a certain someone here, but will resist the temptation. Fellow Days' fans know exactly who I am thinking of. Anyway, this thriller looks good despite it's apparent Minority Report plot. CBS Sept 22
Secret Circle with Shelly Hennig, a Days of Our Lives alum. Wishing Shelly and her cast the best with this one. It is nice to see former Days' actors in other projects, even better to see them succeed after leaving Days. This looks a bit too much like Pretty Little Liars to me, and I couldn't get into that one. Starts on CW sept 15
Steven Spielberg's Terre Nova on Fox may whet my scifi appetite, but Fox delayed it from May to Sept 26, and has a huge budget. It takes more than computer animation to make this scifi nerd happy. Something hints there may be trouble in the series before it even airs.
Now, Fox's Alcatraz, another JJ Abrams show, looks interesting and has some amazing buzz out there. Quite the feat considering it is a midseason show and will have to wait until early 2012 to decide whether it really is that good or if it falters under so much hype.
One NBC show I will put in the "I'll give it a shot" category is Smash. I enjoyed Katherine McPhee when she was on American Idol. She is stunningly beautiful with a tremendous voice, let's see if she can act. Debra Messing and other notables such as Anjelica Huston and Jack Davenport are in it too. Another "midseason" debut.

What are you looking forward to watching? I love my dvr but wish I could set a series to record in advance. I have to wait until it is shown on that week's guide before the dvr will schedule it. Which means I have to rely on my memory to schedule shows to record. Not a comforting thought.
On my next blog I will gush unashamedly about my returning favorites. See you then!
Very well done! I'll be looking forward to your next installment! Katie
